High School Regional Sportsmanship Award Winners Announced

Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame Display Unveiled

The new Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame display was unveiled Tuesday, May 15th at the Louisville Tennis Club.  Thanks to John English and the Hall of Fame Committee for this upgrade.  The unveiling included a welcome by USTA Kentucky Immediate Past President Jane Gamble, a toast by John English, followed by a luncheon and social gathering with members of the Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame.

USTA Board Approves Recovery Rule

Recovery Rule: Extended length of rest between singles matches in Junior, Adult, Senior, NTRP and Wheelchair Divisions. In all singles matches in Junior, Adult, Senior, NTRP, and Wheelchair Divisions in which the match format is two out of three standard tiebreak sets or more, a rest period of two hours shall be offered by the Referee before the player’s next singles match. This Rule does not apply to short set matches and matches that play a tiebreak in lieu of a final third set, nor to any match played indoors where the duration of the match is less than 120 minutes.
 
Support Morgan County High School Tennis and the West Liberty Community


Tornados destroyed the tennis facility in West Liberty earlier this year and the Morgan County High School team lost not only the facility, but also equipment and supplies including a ball machine, teaching carts, nets, and the list goes on. The Raise a Racquet Foundation has set up a fund for Morgan County High School tennis. $200 Reward for Rounding up New Tennis Players!
Tennis Just Got More Rewarding!
Any tennis coach, team captain, Local League Coordinator or other tennis enthusiast will be rewarded with a cash prize when adding six new tennis players to a new or existing team in 2012.  Starting January 1, 2012, the Southern League Initiative is good for the first 350 teams to claim their players. With Jr. Team Tennis Leagues, summer tennis camps, and junior tournaments just around the corner, be sure to check out scholarship and funding opportunities available through USTA Kentucky's endowment fund, Raise a Racquet. Funding is available for all USTA Kentucky Juniors throughout the state and we are currently accepting grant requests. Click here for the application.

 

 

Wallen Named PTR Newcomer of the Year

Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards last week during the 2012 PTR International Tennis Symposium.  Joanne Moore Wallen, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, was named PTR Newcomer of the Year. Wallen started working at Lexington Tennis Club in 2005, as Director of Junior Development.  By 2009, she was promoted to General Manager.  Today, Wallen oversees the club’s daily operations and directs its Junior Programs.  Throughout her career, Wallen has devoted countless hours to growing the sport by developing her own skills and teaching those around her. Wallen’s involvement in tennis has been multifaceted, and includes serving on Board of Directors of USTA Kentucky, and chairing its Junior Competition Committee.  She also served on the USTA Southern Junior Competition Committee.

Judy Anderson Honored with 2011 USTA Southern State Volunteer Service Award 

Judy Anderson of Lexington, former chair of the USTA Kentucky Adult League Committee has been honored with the 2011 USTA Southern State Volunteer Service Award. She currently serves as a member of the USTA Southern Adult League Committee. The award is given annually to an individual who has devoted exceptional time and energy to volunteer work in support of tennis in the USTA Southern Section. Congratulations Judy! 

 

Varga Inducted Into Southern Tennis Hall of Fame

USTA Kentucky would like to congratulate Dr. Don Varga of Louisville, who was recently inducted into the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. Dr. Varga, a 2005 USTA Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame inductee, UsUSTA  served as USTA Southern President from 1990-1992 and spent eight years on the section’s Management Committee. Varga and his family were awarded the USTA Family of the Year award in 1980 and he was the recipient of the Jacobs Bowl Award in 1991, emblematic of the Southern section’s top volunteer. Varga was a co-founder of the Louisville Tennis Club (LTC) in 1970 and served as managing partner for 25 years. Under his leadership, the club grew to 12 indoor courts and 14 outdoor clay courts and hosted the National 16s Clay Court Tournament, Intercollegiate Tennis Association Invitational Tournament, Kentucky Sanctioned Tournaments, Kentucky Adult League Districts, USTA Adult League Sectionals and other various prestigious events.  Along with his wife, Shirley, a former long time Executive Director of USTA Kentucky, he organized the first USTA Kentucky office. He also served as president of USTA Kentucky and served on the state’s board of directors for more than a decade. He was awarded the Kentucky Tennis Association Volunteer of the Year on two occasions and his family was awarded the Kentucky Family of the Year on three occasions.
