18 & Over Adult League Championships Congratulations to all the teams and players that will be advancing to compete in the 2013 USTA Kentucky 18 & Over Adult League Championships in Lexington, June 21 - 23, 2013. Tennis Loses a Good Friend Elizabethtown Mayor Tim Walker died Friday morning at Hardin Memorial Hospital. Walker was very supportive of the ETown Tennis Commission and the new tennis facility at Freeman Lake. Click here to read more about the Elizabethtown Mayor.
Family Tennis Party As a result from a USTA Program Grant, FuzzyBall Tennis Association was able to host a Family Tennis Party in Morganfield. The party consisted of an adult and kids cardio tennis class followed by a lesson on a few skill development games that can be played at home as a family. Junior tennis racquets and balls were handed out at the event and fun was had by all.
Ashland Bellefonte Cancer Center USTA Prize Money Tournament The entry deadline for the Ashland Bellefonte Cancer Center USTA Prize Money Tournament will be July 5th, 2013 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The tournament will be played the weekend of July 19th-21st at the Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland. For more information and for a tournament entry form please click here.
2013 Southern Closed Endorsement List The Endorsement List for the southern closed can now be found by clicking here. In the 10, 14, 16, and 18 divisions Kentucky endorses 9 spots. In the 12's, Kentucky endorses 7 spots. The top six in each division in the Creason automatically get endorsed. After that the Junior Competition Committee met to endorse the remaining spots. The spots were decided using Creason results, Southern rankings, head to head, and sportsmanship. If you were not listed within our quota, please still register, as sometimes draws do not fill and Southern will fill the vacant spots based on Southern Ranking. 2013 Weldon Open Tennis Tournament The Weldon Open Tennis Tournament is one of the oldest privately endowed tennis events in the South. The late Dr. W.A. Weldon built the first tennis courts in Glasgow, Kentucky and held the first of these tournaments there in 1928. This year's tournament will be held on June 28th, 29th and 30th. Senior Cup Team Championships Congratulations to Team Kentucky (captained by Susan Habeeb and Greg Combs) for another great showing at the 27th Annual Senior Cup Team Championships in Huntsville, AL. John Herring (USTA Kentucky President) and Rich Benson won the 45's division and Kentucky still had 5 teams playing in the final day. Click here to read more about the Senior Cup Team Championships. Mini-Tournaments There are some great opportunities to get your 10/12 and Under tennis players some tournament experience. 10 And Under Tennis Showcased on Local News WHAS 11's Michelle Arnold visited some of Louisville's 10 And Under tennis players at Petersburg Park yesterday. 2013 Jason Isaacs Scholarship Recipients Congratulations to the 2013 recipients of the Jason Isaacs Scholarship. Each winner received $1,000 for college tuition. Losing a Legend Kentucky Tennis Hall of Famer, Jackie Cooper, lost his battle with cancer last Thursday morning at the age of 68. Cooper was the Director of Tennis at the La Quinta Resort in Coachella Valley. Click here to read more about the life of tennis icon Jackie Cooper.
Receiving Great Honors Julie Ditty will be inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame on June 13th, 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville. Julie graduated from Vanderbilt in 2002. She was a 3 time All-American, All-SEC, Academic All-SEC, Vanderbilt Female Athlete of the Year, Tennessee Amateur Athlete of the Year and lead Vanderbilt to the NCAA finals in 2001.
Local Adult League Coordinator Contest! USTA National will be rewarding USTA Local League Coordinators for their efforts at increasing participation in USTA League programs. The top prize of two 2014 US Open tickets including airfare and hotel accommodations will go to the one coordinator with the highest increase in total registrations between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014 as compared to registrations between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013. Two prizes to assist at a National League Championship, including airfare and hotel accommodations, will be awarded to coordinators with the highest percentage increase and the highest increase in the "unique" number of players between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014 compared to June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013.
